Quiet Structure

The site I chose for quiet structure is tiffany.com.

The font is very simple and easy to read. The layout of the page is also simple. It's easy to find your way around the page because the categories are at the top, with sub-categories if you choose to go further. There aren't a lot of colors going on, so it's easier for the eyes to focus. I like that the site doesn't have a whole bunch of jewelry showing itself off on the page, but it keeps with a couple of pieces, allowing it to be simple and elegant.

Beauty in Typography

The Beauty is In the Text....

The font I chose it called Quilline. I chose this font because it looks almost exactly like how I write in cursive. I am particular to this font because I cannot write well in print so I always write in cursive. The reason I love this font to narrate my documents with, is because I want others to picture me and know my work. Quilline is me!

Another reason I love the font is because it's simple, thin, and yet beautiful. The font is a Sans-Serif. Quilline has a sort of transitional feel. There are places in the letters that are thicker than others. Mixing the humanistic and modern serifs creates this effect. I don't really feel that it is completely any of them, but if I were to pick one, transitional would be it.

This logo is a great example of good design. The abstract design of the caribou obviously matches the name of the company very well. The Law of Similarity was used by tying the coffee bean in as the body of the caribou. This could also be the Law of Proximity.

The choice of just two colors was smart as well. The colors create contrast and really compliment each other. The font is creative, simple and legible. The simplicity of the logo creates an upper class feel. The audience knows exactly what the product is. Simplicity is the key to good design.

I don't even know where to start with this logo.

First, It looks as though the cross was an image added over the top of another image. I am supposing the Law of Similarity was used in this logo, with the cross being related to "Labyrinth." Clearly the circular formation behind the cross is a "Labyrinth" itself. These two images, however, do not fit well or go together. Color is a huge issue here as well. The Law of Pragnanz is a principle that would've been more effective here. They should've picked the cross(which I don't feel really fits the title), or the labyrinth. Not both.

The social context is very strong in this logo. By looking at the logo you can tell the kind of people that work/own the business, and from that, you can guess the target audience.

"The Truth Will Set You Free." I'm not sure what this is doing in the logo and why it pertains to the coffee shop. If the catch phrase is an important part of the logo, the location of the phrase is inefficient and bad design. You can't hardly read the phrase. It seems to be hiding.

This logo, to me, is just noisy.

Balance, Contrast and Harmony

When this picture was staring me in the eye the other day, I realized that it has everything I was looking for in terms of balance, contrast and harmony.

The grass has amazing texture. I feel like I could put my foot out and walk on it. The picture has balance. You have Sandra's character on the right, and the helmet in his right hand that offsets his size next to her. The two buildings in the background also help create symmetry. The sun creates shadows which therefore creates contrast. The green grass really pops against the sky, as well as their dark clothing. The size difference between the two also creates dramatic contrast.

The cultural and social contexts cannot be ignored. They're extremely powerful. I love that you can see just a portion of her face. In her face you can see love and concern. The picture tells the story of something happening between the two that could be moving. Clearly both of them are incredibly different people, but the way the lighting comes together and the peace you can feel when you look at the two of them together, allows you to see that the two worlds have been brought together(cultural context). The picture is warm in colors, while the actual colors used could actually be very cold. The hand on his back pulls the two of them together allowing the viewer to see the connection between the two of them.

Visceral Response

I've looked at this image several times, and each time I see it, I feel something new. This image makes me sad and I still get teary-eyed everytime. The expression on the father's face explains more than enough. I was so moved by the photo the first time I saw it, that I had to search for the caption on the photo. I was hoping the baby was asleep, but my fears were confirmed when I read that he had died. I am also reminded of why I am grateful to live in the US.
